Lauren Zhang – Thursday 11th July 2024, 7.30pm
Lauren Zhang made her first appearance at RVIPW in a lunchtime recital in 2019 and we are delighted that, whilst currently a senior concentrating on Chemistry at Harvard College, she will return to Lancashire to perform in this final festival year. At the age of 16, Lauren won the BBC Young Musician Competition performing with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra to widespread critical acclaim and since then has performed at the BBC proms and with orchestras across the globe.
Lauren’s programme intersperses gems from Chopin’s output of playful nocturnes and scherzos with two mammoth contributions from Schumann’s catalogue. Sonata No. 1 bears the dedication “To Clara, from Florestan and Eusebius”, a witty reference to the twin aspects of Schumann’s personality. Kreisleriana, subtitled Fantasies for Piano, was composed during a more fraught period of Schumann’ life, portraying the unpredictable Kreisler (a fictional musician who appears in the writings of E T A Hoffmann) as his alter ego.
